  • Overview

    Administers, maintains, develops, and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security, availability and integrity of the company databases.

    Responsibilities

    • Evaluate and maintain multiple database environments; identify data sources, construct data decomposition diagrams, provide data flow diagrams, and document the process; re-use or write codes for database access, modifications and constructions including stored procedures, database server configuration, operating system version and patch level, database version and patch level and database name/purpose/size/owner.

     

    • Develop and maintain procedures and scripts for recreating the database environment and databases for disaster recovery purposes and business continuity strategy.

     

    • Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).

     

    • Design backup processes for server and associated data. Test backups to ensure we can meet Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).

     

    • Troubleshoot SQL server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends.

     

    • Configure SQL server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms.

     

    • As new systems are brought in-house, suggest whether to use stand-alone, clustering, log shipping, mirroring, Windows Azure, or other technologies.

     

    • Install and configure new SQL servers.

     

    • Deploy database change scripts provided by third party vendors.

     

    • When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes.

     

    • Document the company’s database environment.

     

    • Monitor and maintain health system health and security.

     

    • Find DMV queries to answer questions about server-level performance.

     

    • Use tools like SQL Server Maintenance Solution, sp_Blitz® and sp_WhoIsActive to set up backup, optimization, and to diagnose server reliability and performance issues.

     

    • Coordinate activities and maintain extensive communication with appropriate IT staff, user system administrators, department managers, UNFCU staff, project teams and third party vendors.

     

    • Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases.

     

    • Participate in assigned roles in project teams; serve as Database Systems Technical Liaison. Project-specific and other related activities may warrant some level of supervision and/or management of staff/resources.

     

    • Perform regular file system maintenance activities such as purging, archiving, FTP and file encryption/decryption in Windows/UNIX/Linux environments.

     

    • Recommend continuous database performance and process improvement ideas to management and develop solutions to optimize the operational process.

     

    • Provide periodic technology metrics showing the improvement made in various database areas.

     

    • Follow UNFCU IT Service Management processes, policies and procedures.

     

    • Train other IT staff on necessary software.

    Qualifications

    TYPE & AMOUNT OF EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Management Information Systems and 3+ years of experience in database administration
    • Financial/Banking industry experience preferred

     

    TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Expertise in Microsoft SQL Server administration
    • Working knowledge of Oracle database administration is a plus
    • Proven track record of major database system implementations; support and an understanding of application development methodology; project management exposure
    • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language

     

    Minimum requirements:

    • 3-5 years of Microsoft SQL Server maintenance and support
    • 2 years of supporting a Data Warehousing environment
    • 2 -3 years IT operation with strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices
    • Understanding of, and experience with, server-client computing and relational database environments
    • Experience with data management and data processing flowcharting techniques
    • Knowledge of reporting and query tools and practices
    • Technical documentation skills
    • Experience in installing, upgrading and patching SQL Server 2008R2, 2012 and 2016 databases Production experience in Windows OS / RHEL 7 or other Linux distributions
    • Experience in writing PowerShell scripts to monitor OS based processes and automate tasks
    • Good working knowledge in working with MS Support to resolve database outages

     

    Additional qualifications preferred:

    • MCSA – Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate
    • Microsoft Reporting Services Framework
    • Microsoft SharePoint
    • Supporting Web Based Technologies
    • Advanced MS Excel skills

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:

    • Standard office conditions, however certain tasks may require ability to lift up to 50 pounds
    • May require work on weekends or other extended hours
    • Critical system outages and system upgrades may require 24/7 coverage on short notice
